Sonya L.Lawhorn

FOUNDER AND PREVENTIVE EDUCATION MANAGER

​A native of Rochester​, New York. ​Sonya is a highly motivated and seasoned advocate with more than twenty plus years of progressive experience in all areas of Youth Counseling​ and working with those dealing with Mental Health issues​.​ Sonya has always had a passion to work with the young people of the Rochester Community since her High School years. Sonya feels blessed to have come together with the other founders to see The STAR, Inc. Program come to fruition. ​

EDUCATION
Sonya received her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1988.​ Sonya is a 2011 Leadership Rochester graduate and the Class Speaker. ​ In 1994, Sonya graduated of the United Way African American Leadership Development Program.


CAREER AND AFFILIATIONS


​Sonya is currently the Re-Entry Coordinator and Discharge Planner for the Gwinnett County Detention Center. ​Sonya is​ committed to working to empower the young women of the Monroe County as​ our Preventive Education Manager,​ she does this by connecting with community leaders that are willing to invest a couple of hours out of their busy schedules to share their expertise, and skills with the STAR, Inc. participants. Sonya ​has had a​filiations​​ with: Monroe County Inter-Agency Council, Reclaiming Youth Collaborative, Greater Rochester Mother of Twins Club, Rochester City School District Hall of Fame, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, PTA-President, ​National Association of Professional Women, City of Rochester Pillars of Hope, Boys and Girls Club- Program Committee and the Catholic Youth Organization ( CYO). ​

S​onya​ is a ​former member of Mt. Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church​ where she was President of the Youth Department, however she has since moved her Membership to Beulah Baptist Church in Decatur, Ga​. Sonya was affiliated with the Rochester Debutantes' Club and made her debut in 1983.
